The workshop of Petr Velkoborský is for all those who wish to know more about the magical world of large format photography. The main focus of work with large format camera is largely the photography of landscape, architecture, still life, portrait as well as experimental work with the depth of sharpness, multi expositions, moving fuzziness, the use of expired materials or directly of photographical paper as supposed to transparent paper film or the alteration of developing process. However, for practical reasons, the participants will stick to a standard negative material processing 4×5 (400 form) in an automatic processor. Having mastered the basic skills, the students’ actual creative work will continue in the direction of their individual interest.

The photographer and lecturer Jiří Turek has earned his reputation as one of the most renowned Czech photographers thanks to his work in the world of fashion photography. In its tradition, also this workshop focuses on fashion photography. In the world of fashion, the boundary of what is fashionable has been moved back and forth many times. Fashion trends are coming back. Things that were fashionable in the 70′s or 80′s and would have been completely outdated five years ago are coming back into fashion again. We will photograph portraits as well as a fashion story in a way so that the boundaries between „retro“ and current outlook on fashion shall disappear. To help us work, we will be inspired by the beautiful premises of Lednice and Valtice Chateaux and their surroundings.

In the workshop of Antonín Kratochvíl we will attempt to capture both arranged and spontaneous portraits. Portrait expresses a magical moment of recognition between a photographer and an object and what makes this photograph powerful and memorable is the ability to capture human emotions and give the picture its soul. The participants of this workshop will endeavour to get to the centre of the photographed object. Students will work both during the day and night and they will also co-operate with other workshop participants posing as photographed objects. The aim of this workshop is to encourage students to photograph people and other objects in a different way with the ability to empathise with the feelings, movements and other phenomena.

Contents
Photographing fashion and portraits during a „par force“ hunt, while taking advantage of natural situations as a backdrop for arranged photography. Decadent portrait of an aristocratic lady amidst the spirit of hunting. Everything is going to take place in the area of Lednice Chateau and its park. Prepared will be an outstanding production including splendid costumes, props such as opulent hunting feasts and much more. You are going to be working under the leadership of a renowned photographer and teacher.

Hunting par force ( from French par force de chiens, meaning with the force of dogs).

This was an organized hunt when the nobility on horseback followed and tracked down a deer, previously released and then chased by a group of dogs aiming at exhausting the animal which was then killed with a dagger. Later on, the aim was just to exhaust the animal and, after that, return it into its natural environment.

There is only one type of light. It is down to us how we work with it. There are the same conditions for everyone – just the physics and the eye. Nothing more is needed. Actually, it is. It is essential to find out how to work with it, where to emphasise or where to suppress it. That should always happen with a humbleness to its strength and in a way so the subject of a photograph isn’t forgotten.

Jiří Turek will lead a workshop starting with the client assignment, through choosing the right models, location, taking your own photographs, working with the light (mainly the natural source of light but also with various artificial sources) to final retouching of a picture which is ready to be printed in a magazine.

Recommended equipment
Digital camera, laptop, memory card. Other props which could be incorporated into the photographed scene are welcome.
Detailed programme of the photo workshop will be published before the end of August.

This programme and its schedule as well as its topics can change according to the agreement between the lecturer and his students.

The workshop with Antonin Kratochvil will explore the human psyche and go under the surface of human emotions. Antonin will demonstrate how even in the difficult art of portraiture is possible to show unique style and interpretation. This course is designed to encourage students to photograph people in an entirely different way, to get a sense of movement and light in their work and to capture a moment that explores the unique and complicated nature of human being.

There will be daily discussions and reviews of work in progress, as well as one day of editing student’s work by the instructor. Participants should be confident working on their own with Antonin’s guidance. This workshop will be digital.

Antonin Kratochvil is a founder of the VII photo agency.

As a photojournalist Kratochvil has sunk his teeth into his fair share of upheaval and human catastrophes while passionately pursuing his documentation of the time in which he lives.

Kratochvil’s own refugee life has often mirrored what he has rendered on film. Kratochvil’s unique style of photography is the product of personal experience, intimate conditioning and not privileged voyeurism. He is the visual poet laureate of photojournalism,
Over the years his fluid and unconventional work has been sought by numerous publications stretching across widely differing interests. From shooting Mongolia’s street children for the magazine published by the Museum of Natural History to a portrait session with David Bowie for Detour, from covering the war in Iraq for Fortune Magazine to shooting Deborah Harry for a national advertising campaign for the American Civil Liberties Union. Kratochvil’s ability to see through and into his subjects and show immutable truth has made his pictures not facsimiles but uncensored visions.

And yet, what set his kind apart from the many is his consistency and struggle to carry on.

Antonin Kratochvil has received numerous awards, grants and honorable mentions dating back to 1975 including the Infinity Award: Photojournalist of the Year given by International Center of Photography, First Prize, World Press Photo Portrait Series, Medal from the City of Prague for Photography awarded by the Mayor of Prague, A Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Photojournalism, A Golden Light Award for Best Documentary Book, Vanishing, and numerous others.

In addition, Kratochvil has published many innovative and creative books like Vanishing, a collection of natural and human phenomena that on the verge of extinction. What makes this book so innovative is the twenty years it has taken to produce, making it not only historical from the onset, but a labor of love and a commitment to one man’s conscience. This holds true of all of Kratochvil’s books in including this years, Moscow Nights.

Kratochvil’s photographs are in many public and private collections throughout the world.

Work with a large format camera (Sinar, Cambo and so on), developing black and white flat films 4x5in and their direct copying onto photographic paper, scanning the negatives and editing them on a computer. Attention will be paid to photographing small products (Scheimpflug rule), portrait, landscape/architecture (linear academical perspective) and further in respect to individual specialization. Scanned negatives will always be shown with commentary and further discussion in the evening. As part of this workshop there will be a lecture on exponometric methods with respect to the zone system of an American photographer and scientist Ansel Adams.

Due to time and technical limitations, only flat films 4x5in 400ASA will be available and their processing will be, to begin with, done by an experienced assistant so there aren’t any unnecessary errors. Later on there will be an opportunity to do these film/process combinations individually. Which means that whoever is interested, can (according to our time schedule), try out their own films, developing and processing.

All participants will receive 12 flat films (included in the price of the workshop), other films can be purchased locally at a price of about 16 CZK per piece.

Own equipment (if you have available): light metre, laptop, flashcard and cable release. Large format camera 4×5 welcome.
